Our House Parent (Donovan)

Donovan is our house parent whom we will be staying with for our time here.

About Us

Laressa - I was raised in a strong Adventist family. As a child, even with my family's good influence, I was always rebellious and apathetic to spiritual things. I would steal little things all the time, yell at my parents, try very hard to be popular at school, and even questioned the existence of God. When I was 13 years old, however I started reading a book called "Messages to Young People." There started growing in me a desire to give my life to Jesus. I got baptized at the end of that school year. During summer camp when I was 14 I realized that I wanted to be active in ministry for Him for the rest of my life. I had no clue what that entailed, but the next school year I heard about a program called Youth Rush that did literature evangelism. Immediately I knew that that is where I was supposed to be. Every summer after that I have been involved in literature evangelism. As I reached the end of high school, God impressed me with the nearness of His second coming and the importance of staying active in this specific ministry. He opened up the door for me to go to SOULS West. I am so happy here, working for God, and surrounded with young people that like to do the same. I can't wait to see how God will work during this practicum.

Jhont'e - Jhont'e Dodd was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona and grew up attending Beacon Light Seventh Day Adventist Church in Phoenix, AZ. She received all of her education attending public schools. After attending Northern Arizona University, she became a finance consultant for various organizations to help high school and college students receive the best funding opportunities for college. She loved being in the service of helping the youth, but her passion for ministry for the youth grew stronger. She felt a dying need to train and educate the youth to see the importance of following God at a young age. In 2012 her desire and passion grew to follow the Lords calling for her life. She joined Youth Rush from her local conference in Arizona. After her first summer of canvassing a fire ignited and she now attends SOULS West (Seventh-Day Adventist Outreach Leadership School). Other than reading her Bible, learning of different cultures, eating healthy cultural foods, and poetry, she loves spending time with family and friends. Jhont'e does not only loves attending SOULS West but also has a burden to travel the world to reach souls and teach people about the love of Jesus

Josué Valdez Garcia - Born in Salt Lake City Utah, lived in Mexico till the age of 6 and arrived to the U.S. I have lived most of my life in Azusa CA. It was at the age of 7 that I first heard about God and the belief behind what I once called a myth or as many call it today, a fairy tale. At the age of 10 I began to notice the Holy Spirit moving in my heart and helping me to seek God, it’s as if I was Samuel in the Bible, God was calling me. I was baptized at the age of 13 and it was at this time that the phase of a new life began. Living in Azusa brought many trials and temptations, trying to maintain a balance of what I thought was life I became a street kid. For those that don’t really know what a street kid is, it is one who learns more from life and mistakes/decisions, depends just on self, he/she is more venerable to sexual immorality, drugs, and violence. Then again they are mostly the ones that actually don’t choose a life of drugs, sex, violence, a bad living atmosphere but it is through seeking that some do fall into destruction. The difference for my life was that Jesus took a step with me and has continued to where I am at today. Leaving the life behind and seeking truly for who God is, I was brought to a summer program where I experienced Jesus. Through trails, storms, not understanding why at times, faith that increases, understanding increase, knowledge, most of all through the experience of the Christian walk I was brought to SOULS WEST. Today I don’t live like Josue Valdez Garcia but as Jesus my Saviour and Redeemer! Yes the old man does at times wants to come back but it is through Jesus that daily I find victory. I am now involved in ministry, I don’t consider my self a street kid but rather a child of God, I now seek the will of God and not my own, I find comfort in pleasing my Lord, and I now find joy in the salvation of souls.

Calvin Gardner - I was Born in Los Angeles, CA. At the age of 17 I went into the entertainment industry doing behind the scenes, videography, and production assistant. During this time I was invited to a weekend seminar called "America's Idol". After attending this weekend seminar I was convicted by the Holy Spirit to follow God to the full extent, instead of having one foot in and one foot out. My friend Juan Arias invited me to a summer program called "Youth Rush" which is a 10 week literature evangelism door-to-door program. During the program I applied to my current Bible College "SOULS West" to receive a foundation for what I believe in is the word of God. I am currently attending this Bible College which has been one of the best decisions in my life. I currently have been doing evangelism for 2 years and continue to do evangelism until my time is up on this earth, or till Jesus returns.
